Choose the Right Accountant for Your Business

Today’s accountants work alongside business owners as strategists, mentors and trouble-shooters. They offer advice on management, information technology and accounting systems, as well as tax and accounting advice. When choosing an accountant, keep these 3 things in mind:

1. What services do they offer? Some accountants focus on compliance work, others offer broader business consulting. If you’re seeking long-term support and guidance, then going to an accountant specialising in one-off compliance support doesn’t make sense.

2. What is their experience? Your accountant should have a proven track record – experience with the opportunities and pitfalls your business will face and able to understand the issues confronting you every day. Some firms specialise in dealing with major corporates – others have expertise in the smaller end of town.

3. What services do you need? Have a clear understanding of your needs. Shop around until you find an accountant or firm whose expertise matches your business requirements. You’ll also discover the broad range of services offered, and perhaps even discover a few you didn’t know you needed.
