Get the Best Value from Your Lawyer:
Wasting Time Costs You Money

Don’t sign a major document without a lawyer’s advice. If you sign a document you don’t fully understand, it could be a costly mistake. Consulting a lawyer will ease your anxiety and save money in the long run.

A lawyer’s fees depend on the work he or she does for you. There are a number of steps you can take to minimise these fees and maximise the value you get from your lawyer.

• Don’t leave things to the last minute. Lawyers will charge more if they have to drop other work to help you at short notice.

• Be well prepared. Before your visit note down all the things you want
to discuss. When you see your lawyer, bring all relevant papers – legal documents, letters, receipts, etc.

• Write down the key elements of your case. If it’s a dispute put down your version in writing. Make a list of key events in the order they happened. When selling property, supply all relevant details in writing.

• Ask for a written estimate. When you get a quote make sure you and your lawyer agree on the work to be done. Check whether the estimate only covers lawyer’s fees or if it includes payments the lawyer will make on your behalf.
