May 28th, 2009
Despite the fact there’s a recession on, people looking for a move to a new position shouldn’t be scared to negotiate on salary. Specialist recruitment firm Robert Half says when a candidate is presented with an offer is the time to make a play for a better deal. Robert Half director Tim Hird says a candidate’s strongest position is when the offer of a position has been made, and no matter what your first reaction is you should be positive to your potential future employer.
The keys to successful negotiation in today’s economy are realistic expectations and flexibility. But Hird says don’t be afraid to aim high, while not pricing yourself out of the running. One of the most important things to do if you are looking for a better offer is gather information to back your claim. You should also be prepared to accept alternatives to cold hard cash. Have two figures in mind when you enter the negotiation, The first is your ideal package, the second is the bottom line. If you end up somewhere between those two, you’ll have succeeded.
