Law: Double Edge To Latest Labour Law

August 27th, 2010

On the plus side of the ledger Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson has introduced a Bill to amend the Holidays Act so workers will be able to exchange their fourth week of leave for cash if they want to. But not so hot for business – Wilkinson has made a last-minute worker-friendly addition to the Bill. She’s slipped in a clause to counter what she says was a recent Employment Court ruling workers aren’t legally entitled to the public holidays which fall within the period when a business shuts over Christmas and New Year and have to use their annual leave to cover those days. Wilkinson says “the law will be amended to ensure working Kiwis remain entitled to those days off, as they have been in the past.”
