NZ Exports: NZ Businesses Missing Out In South Asia

Despite a Free Trade deal being negotiated with India, South Asian countries – India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan – are pretty much off the radar for our exporters and importers. A study by the Asia NZ Foundation says businesses have so far failed to take advantage of developing trade potential in South Asia. It says no South Asian country yet features in the list of NZ’s top 25 trading partners. But the Foundation’s research director Andrew Butcher says there is almost an unlimited amount of money to be made in South Asia.

Examples of industries NZ could target include food and drink and education services for Indian students. Barriers to doing business include the perception it is too bureaucratic, “you have to be patient.” Trade Minister Tim Groser says the…potential India FTA offers great promise for NZ businesses. India is already one of our fastest-growing markets, with NZ exports having tripled over the last decade.
