NZ Technology: NZ Broadband Plan GETS OECD Thumbs Up

April 30th, 2010

The Govt’s $1.5bn plan to put 75% of NZ homes on fibre optic cable broadband has been backed by the OECD. The Paris based organisation says the NZ and Aust Govts are pretty much alone in the OECD in proposing national fibre networks, but are being very forward-looking. It says in NZ it will be “a foundation for economic growth in the country for 50 years.” The OECD says the network will pay for itself within 10 years if it can help in cutting the costs of health and education and the transport and electricity industries by between 0.5% and 1.5%, which is achievable.
