NZers Pessimistic - Don’t Trust Business

A new report on life in NZ, called ‘Attitude New Zealand’ has a few lessons for businesses. It shows widespread concern for household finances. Following the release of poor retail sales figures for the March quarter comes news most NZers are not planning to buy anything costing more than $2,000 in the next six months. The survey highlights fears over job security, lack of savings and dwindling retirement assets.
The survey also points to a “head in the sand” attitude, with 78% of respondents saying they don’t want to know anything more about the recession which is having a powerful affect on their spending habits. In a blow to the business sector, only 1% have complete trust in NZ businesses, with 5% having no trust at all and 55% remaining ambivalent. The Warehouse and Kiwi Bank are the most trusted.
Most NZers are increasingly comfortable conducting their business transactions online - 72% purchase on line, while 83% regularly conduct internet banking. Twitter is a rapidly rising social media platform with 6% of NZers regularly tweeting, even more than in the US where Twitter use is at 5%.
