Promotion A Health Risk?
May 15th, 2009
Most people who are in work would welcome the extra money and responsibility which comes with a promotion – but a new study suggests it can be bad for your health. Researchers at Britain’s University of Warwick say when people get promoted they suffer about 10% more mental strain on average, and are also less likely to take the time to visit a doctor. They say getting a promotion at work is not as great as many people think.
The research finds the mental health of managers typically deteriorates after a job promotion, and in a way which goes beyond merely a short-term change. Other studies have shown stress is deadly, raising the risks of anything from the common cold to cancer. It also fuels disease and makes people forget things.
Following a promotion, people reported an average 20% fall in their visits to the doctor which was due to the sudden lack of time, and stress of the new job.
