Small Firms Start To Bust Recession

September 11th, 2009

A new business confidence survey shows the engine room of NZ business, the SMEs are starting to come out of recession, but they’re upset with the Govt’s response to their sector’s suffering. The Research NZ Business Confidence Report for July shows some strong positive sentiment, with half of those surveyed predicting better conditions within six months and three-quarters within a year.

20% of businesses are actually thriving in the recession claiming they are experiencing improved conditions, investing and boosting staff numbers. These businesses are mainly in the services sector.

Harder-hit companies are in the primary and manufacturing sectors. But the Govt’s response came off badly in the survey with 33% unhappy with how the public sector had reacted. The Jobs Summit was declared the biggest waste of time with only 1% of SMEs saying they had faith the initiative would help.

WHAT SMEs WANT FROM GOVT:
• Recession busting tips to the Government from small businesses:
• Pressure banks to reduce interest rates
• Give struggling businesses a tax holiday
• Peg the exchange rate at US55c
• Include small business in the nine-day fortnight
• Subsidise training and apprenticeships
